Can an ICF home have a sloped concrete roof?

Yes. WHITEHAWK ICF is evaluating both sloped and flat reinforced insulated concrete roof strategies. A concrete-roof home does not have to be a flat-roofed box. Pitched, gabled, hipped, low-slope, flat, and other architecturally appropriate forms may be evaluated through architecture and project-specific engineering.

The assumption that concrete means flat comes from commercial construction, where flat decks are the norm. Residential reinforced insulated concrete roof and deck systems can be designed for slope, and the visible roofline can carry the same shingle, tile, standing-seam, or slate expression a family expects.

Concrete structure. Architectural freedom. Those two ideas are not in tension.

  • Structural support, spans, and connections
  • Waterproofing and the water-shedding layer
  • Drainage, gutters, valleys, and overflow
  • Insulation strategy and where the thermal layer sits
  • Finish roofing material and its attachment
  • Forming and construction method for the selected slope

These are conceptual design directions. WHITEHAWK ICF has not completed a Whitehawk Home, and final roof form, pitch, assembly, drainage, finishes, and structure will be determined through architecture and project-specific engineering.
