Why does HawkCore include a concrete roof?
The roof is the sixth side of the exterior enclosure and often the portion most exposed to wind uplift, debris, hail, fire, embers, heat, and water. Capping resilient ICF walls with a conventional structural-wood roof leaves the most exposed surface as the weakest one. In HawkCore, the reinforced insulated concrete roof is mandatory, not an upgrade.

The pattern we are trying to avoid
A very common outcome in resilient homebuilding is a house with excellent concrete walls and an ordinary wood-truss roof. The walls will very likely outlast the roof. In a severe wind event, the roof is the assembly most likely to fail first, and once the enclosure is breached, the interior, the contents, and often the walls follow.
The same logic applies to embers, which collect in roof geometry and vents; to hail, which meets the roof first; and to solar heat gain, which is heaviest on the roof plane.
What making it mandatory actually means
It means the six sides—a fully insulated concrete floor or slab, four exterior ICF walls, and the roof—can be engineered and connected as one enclosure with a continuous load path, rather than as a strong system with a conventional lid attached to it.
It also means the option is not available to remove the concrete roof to reduce cost. That is a deliberate constraint. A Whitehawk Home without it would not be a Whitehawk Home.
What the concrete roof does not do by itself
- It is not the waterproofing layer. A membrane or roofing assembly still sheds water.
- It does not remove maintenance. Flashings, sealants, and drains still need inspection.
- It does not set the architecture. Slope and finish are design decisions.
- It does not eliminate the need for engineering on every project.
What this means for your family
The part of your home that faces the storm first should not be the part that was built to the lowest standard.
